NFL Future in VR

Check out a video explaining the NFL’s approach to VR here. It’s coming…

We’ve re-launched the website!

We have today relaunched Live360Video.com from its former more spartan appearance. There is still much to do, but Live360Video.com is now closer to what we set out to build at the beginning –  a guide to upcoming high quality live VR streaming broadcasts, on whichever platform they may be. It is 100% editorial, i.e. real human beings, doing actual research! Things are just getting started with live VR broadcasts, and it will be fascinating to watch how this new medium grows, until it is ubiquitous, and we look back at this time, when it was all just beginning. Right now there are maybe 1 or 2 live VR broadcasts a week – the odd NBA game, some occasional concerts and festivals, and (soon) a handful of NHL games. There’s just a few companies capable of bringing the actual technology to do this – companies like NextVR, 360 Designs and 30 Ninjas. It’s still very much an ‘experimentation’ phase, and we are looking forward to documenting the growth of this new medium over the months and years ahead. Indeed we plan for this to become a kind of ‘IMDB for Live VR’. At the moment, there are so few historical broadcasts (less than 50?), we plan to document all of them if possible. In short we would like to become a useful reference of almost every professionally produced live VR broadcast known. So if you know of a past live VR broadcast, or upcoming one, please let us know at tips [at] live360video.com ! We hope you love the idea of live VR as much as we do, and we hope you find our new website useful!

BREAKING NEWS – Hockey is coming live to VR!

0
Wow, things are heating up in Live VR! In a massive news announcement, Molson Canadian (the beer company) and Sportstnet (a Canadian media network) have announced they will broadcast SIX NHL hockey matches in 360/VR, over six consecutive Saturday nights, starting next Saturday February 18th, with a game between the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. This represents the very first time an NHL match has been streamed live in VR to the general public, according to the official news release. This is a truly historic event if so. The series of six games, over six weekends, will be captured by 3 live VR cameras, and users will access the experience through a (presumably Google Cardboard style…) VR headset, given away free in cases of Molson Canadian beer. Users can download an app from the App Store or Google Play, and access the experience through a PIN code that comes with the beer. Here’s the full list of games being streamed live in VR:
  • Calgary Flames @ Vancouver Canucks – Saturday, Feb. 18
  • Montreal Canadiens @ Toronto Maple Leafs – Saturday, Feb. 25
  • Detroit Red Wings @ Edmonton Oilers – Saturday, March 4
  • Calgary Flames @ Winnipeg Jets – Saturday, March 11
  • Chicago Blackhawks @ Toronto Maple Leafs – Saturday, March 18
  • Ottawa Senators @ Montreal Canadiens – Saturday, March 25
This is super exciting news for the live VR industry, and it makes sense to add hockey to the mix, with its smaller playing arena, much like basketball. We’re particularly interested to nerd out and see whether they try 60fps. Perhaps they will try something crazy like this famous experiment from the 1990’s.
